Mirin sat by the stream watching the twins play. It was clear that Reggie was going to be extremely adept with magic, as the boy kept summoning globes of water into the air to try dropping them on his sister's head. Regina, too, was adept, but in the ways like her father, Orn. She dodged the water, barely keeping her balance and using the quick aid of a squirrel to race over and nibble Reggie's arm. They would both giggle and return to their play. They were growing so fast.
She leaned back and closed her eyes. What would her mother think if she could see them now? Mirin didn't assume much - her mother, Claire, had been gone for a long time now. Sanria was more of a mother to her than Claire. Though, it didn't mean she couldn't try to reach out.
'Mother,' Mirin telepathed, but got back only static. Perplexed, she tried again. 'Mother?' This time the telepath went through and a very surprised voice responded.
'Mirin? Oh Gods, I can telepath... I can reach out!'
'Mom, what are you talking about?' Mirin sent, dropping the formal mother. Something wasn't right.
'You have to talk to Gilean and Sanria, you have to tell them that Ruthivan killed my father and is in the process of moving to the Tribal camp. I need help... I desperately need help. He's lost his mind.'
'What?'
'I can't focus for long or he'll know, he has an eye on me right now. He has lashed out at me, killed your grandfather, and ... oh please, Mirin... get someone to help us. Please.'
'Of... of course,' Mirin telepathed in return. She was shocked at just how desperate her mother sounded, and even more so that this man who had stolen Claire from her father had stooped to murder.
'You know how to find the camp?'
'No... '
'Ask Askari... he can help... I hope he'll help... Gods I hope he will help. I'm ready to take my own life but he's sealed up my magic.'
'No... no mom, don't do that. I'll get help, I promise, just... hang in there.'
'Thank you, Mirin... thank you.'
The connection was broken and Mirin stared blankly ahead. How exactly did one go about stopping an esper from beating an esper?
'Twins,' she telepathed. 'We need to go inside. I have to talk to Grandma Ria and Grandpa Gilean.'
"Is bad?" Regina asked.
'No, no it's okay.'
"Why are you sad, Mama?" Reggie asked.
'I'm... not sad,' Mirin replied, but couldn't shake the tremor of anxiety that gripped her.

Sandorin
Matinus looked down at the little sleeping baby and scrunched up his face and tilted his head. Babies weren't exactly his favorites - Reggie and Regina were a little bit different because they were his niece and nephew - but Sandorin, this was his half-brother. He could feel a strange calm from the little baby in front of him, like he was a lot older than he was really.
Sandorin opened his eyes just a bit and looked up at Matinus. It was freaky. He looked down to see Nioma come in and lean her face against the bars of the crib. "He's little, huh?" she asked.
"Yeah, he'll get bigger though."
"Will we be able to play with him?"
Matinus shrugged. "Probably you will, but I don't know if
I'm going to play with him."
"Why not?" Nioma squeezed her face into the bars and danced about on one leg as she looked at her half-brother.
"I'm older than you are."
"So? Mister Bunny is older than me too, and he still plays with me."
"Mister Bunny is a rabbit, not a boy."
"Mister Bunny is a mister."
Matinus smirked and left the baby behind, walking through Sandorin's bedroom, through Nioma's, and back to his own. He could tell his dad was really excited about the little baby - his baby with Sanria - which made him a little sad. He didn't seem to love him or Nioma as much as he already loved Sandorin. He could feel his dad worrying, too, like jealously worrying.
Matinus had already talked to Colin about being so afraid he made Sanria tired, but there was something a little wrong and he couldn't really figure it out. Colin felt afraid and said he thought he was going to lose Sanria to his dad, his dad felt jealous and worried, and Sanria - he just felt this weird confusion. Then, Nioma, always excitable and strange with how she could see stuff that wasn't visible. Just the other day she said Sanria's belly was sparkling. Then Sandorin... the weirdest calm baby Matinus had ever seen.
He walked upstairs and went to Orn and Mirin, but they were busy with Reggie and Regina. They were busy with them a lot. He walked outside and sat by the stream. There was a strange uneasiness that was floating around. Something too weighty for a twelve-year-old boy to worry about.

Redirected Attention
Sanria settled herself in Sandrine's Tea Shop in the castle amongst the cushions and looked over at a man who appeared average and non-descript. Tenchi was his name, and it was a name that had crossed her desk several times, though she had not had the mental capacity to even begin to deal with the application. Now, however, she was desperate to give herself a little distance with which to think. She needed to raise her head above the woes of her family circumstances and really do some work.
They spoke for a time, teacups in hand, about his discovery of the island and the Keepers. His voice was gentle as he spoke, as though humble and a little unsure. He also seemed to start when a member of the Keepers would arrive, each new face catching him unawares, as though he had been somewhere for a long while where no people had been.
Vorcet came, then Kineada, then Orn (accompanied by two crying babies which gave Sanria pause to collect her grandchildren that she had not seen in many days). The questions were from all angles, the interview, which it had become, was a success. The few hours spent in conversation with Tenchi helped to refresh Sanria in ways nothing else had. In a unanimous agreement, they welcomed Tenchi into the Keepers of Balance.
Though she wondered about his past, Sanria could tell that he was a good soul. Moreover since Kineada knew him from a previous time. She excused herself, swapping infants to give a pacified Regina to Orn in exchange for a squalling Reggie, and went to her office. She calmed the baby boy with a warm smile and gentle squeezes, then held him in her arm as she looked through the other accumulated papers on her desk. Others wished to join, others needed to be reached.
Sanria gave a deep sigh as Orn walked in and pushed the work to the back of her mind. She could sense Tenchi roaming the castle and she smiled. The family on the island had grown and for the better, she felt. "We have more who wish to join us, Orn," she said, nodding to the papers. "Oh, really?" he replied, looking quite flustered, Regina having started crying anew. He patted the baby's back with a new parent exasperation. "Soon," Sanria chuckled, taking both babies into her arms to give Orn a moment's peace. "We'll get to them soon."

I Just Want to Make Things Right (3/3)
It wouldn't have been received well even under the best of circumstances. Mirin knew this. It still needed to be said, and she was convinced of her right to speak it. She'd practically raised Matinus while her father lost himself in the temple, pining after her mother. Mirin didn't believe he could have fallen so deeply in love with Sanria, not to the point that he wasn't willing to do the right thing... but to her shock, her father wasn't letting go. She begged her dad to put Sanria and Colin in a room together, just to watch them, but he refused. "No Mirin. I don't need to put them together. I'm not forcing Sanria to be with me. She's here because she wants to be, and I want her."
The words took her by surprise. She had grown accustomed to her father, Gilean, being a bit on the weak side. He sacrificed his own happiness and family for everyone else. But he wasn't budging. 'I think you're a good person to everyone else,' she telepathed. 'You help women with their babies, help heal those in need... I think that's what you're the best at doing. I think... not that it matters... that you and Sanria are wrong, Dad. Once, maybe... but not now.'
There was nothing more to say that wasn't met with severe resistance. Her dad thought she was saying the words out of resentment for his absence in her life. He kept apologizing, not that it wasn't nice to hear it, but her point was lost. She returned finally to the cavern and told Colin of her discussion - but even he seemed cowed by the act.
Orn had been right. This was something they would have to sort out on their own. No matter how messed up she thought it was, or how wrong. She picked up both Reggie and Regina and smiled down at them, combing their minds to discover they were both ravenously hungry. She shook her head and set to work tending her family.

I Just Want to Make Things Right (1/3)
Mirin and Orn had moved in with Colin - forever Mr. Stone to Mirin. It was a little strange being back at the cavern, now her home, and dealing with two infants that were utterly dependent on her. She fit in with the routine better than many her age simply because she could communicate with her children already. She went into Reggie's mind to soothe him with vivid images of bears, and went into Regina's mind in turn with images of butterflies. They, in turn, sent images back to their mother - their needs and desires. It wore her out to be in constant contact, but no one could ever say she wasn't a vigilant, attentive mom.
Then there was the issue of Colin, Mr. Stone. He adored the babies, even if he was concerned about their size. He busied himself with their care when Mirin needed a rest, and even when she didn't, when he came around the babies sent out images of a large smiling face and the sensation of complete immersion and protection. But when the infants were sleeping and the cavern was quiet, Mirin could sense the restlessness in Mr. Stone's heart. She'd grown up seeing Mr. Stone and Mrs. Stone together, Colin and Sanria. The guilt she felt was the fact that it was her father that was driving a wedge.
Now, after a bit of time, Mr. Stone seemed even more agitated and tense. He paced more without realizing it. His jaw was more set, and the eyes that watched the babies were more distant. Mirin chose at that point to talk to her father.

Current Character Description - Reggie Stone
There is definitely something special about this tiny little baby. He has creamy white skin and a tuft of purplish-blonde hair that sticks up on the top of his small head. His eyes sparkle with a hint of golden light as he often tries to fit his whole little fist into his toothless mouth. When nobody's looking, small objects occasionally levitate around his crib. He is only slightly bigger than his twin sister, Regina.

They'd called in Gilean to help, but Mirin was too focused on the sheer strain her body was enduring to realize her dad was peeking at her undercarriage. Though she'd been calmed and had a great deal of the raw pain taken away, Mirin still had to focus when the contractions came. She had no time to talk, no time to think. Her body was on autopilot and she a mere slave to its whims.
In less than thirty minutes, Mirin and Orn were staring dumbfounded ino two scrunched, red, and disgruntled little faces - a boy and a girl - while Gilean looked on with pride. A newly arrived Sanria flew about the room like a twittering bird, perching first on Orn, then Mirin to look at the tiny works of art.
Only when the babies opened their mouths to cry in unison did the full weight of the situation finally hit Mirin. No one was going to come carry the babies away - these were hers. She was to feed them, tend them, care for them, protect them, and love them... she and Orn.
Sanria and Gilean gone, the twins sleeping between them, Mirin looked at Orn and saw on his face absolute love. She felt a warmth in her heart as she realized this family was her own. They were the new Stones. 'We still need to name them,' she telepathed. "Well... I was hoping we could name the boy Reggie..."
Mirin thought back to all the time spent with Orn's bear, all the times Reggie the bear had teased about Orn and Mirin making cubs. He'd never see the perfection of that truth. 'Reggie and Regina,' she telepathed.
"Both Reggie?" Orn asked with a grin.
'I think Reggie would like knowing he had two cubs with his name.'
"Yeah... he would."
